Every year the pattern repeats: a handful of toys go viral in November, stock evaporates by the second week of December, and resellers charge double for whatever's left. You can't predict the exact viral toy. Nobody can. But thecategories that sell out are the same every year. Buy from them in October and you're immune to the whole circus.

When the official hot-toy lists land
The demand curve for a toy starts the day a big retailer puts it on a list. Walmart published its Top Toys list on 9 September in 2024 and on 16 September in 2025, and Target and Amazon publish theirs in the same few weeks. As of this update the 2026 lists were not out yet. Once they are, you have roughly three weeks before the toys on them start disappearing, which is why the buying window in this guide is late September through October, not December. We'll note here when the lists are live.
1. The brand-name building sets
Licensed and flagship building sets are Christmas's most reliable sellout. Production runs are fixed months in advance, and when they're gone, they're gone until February. If a rocket, truck, or castle is on the list, buy it early.

This is the question we get asked most, so here is the honest shape of it. Holiday toy inventory is ordered in spring, built over the summer and shipped to warehouses by early fall. What a retailer has by Halloween is most of what it will ever have. Restocks do happen, but they arrive in waves rather than on demand, and the waves get smaller as December goes on.
Early to mid November is the big one: stores fill shelves ahead of Black Friday, and a toy that sold out in October usually reappears here. Early December brings a smaller wave, mostly stock that was already in transit. After about the middle of December, replenishment of a genuinely hot toy mostly stops, because anything not already in a warehouse cannot reach a shelf, or a doorstep, in time. From that point what you see on Amazon is increasingly third-party sellers pricing the shortage, and the next real restock is January, which helps a February birthday and not a stocking.
How to catch a restock if you did miss October: use the "notify me" or in-stock alert on the product page rather than refreshing it; check first thing in the morning, when overnight receiving shows up; look at store pickup, which draws on a different inventory pool than shipping; and check the brand's own store, which often holds stock back for its own site. And keep a fallback picked out. The one thing a restock alert cannot give you is time.
What the toy industry itself expects in 2026
The Toy Association's Toy of the Year 2026 finalists are the industry's own read on what families are buying, chosen by judges on innovation, play value and market success across 16 categories. Three patterns run through the list: toys built around emotional wellness and calm, cooperative play; collectibles made for trading and display; and big franchises and viral characters that pull in more than one generation. Map that onto the four categories above and you get the same answer this guide has always given. Licensed building sets are the franchise pattern, character plush is the collectible pattern, and the family game is the cooperative one. The categories are stable. Only the specific toy changes.
The calendar that beats the shortage
Late September: read the retailer lists the week they land. October: buy the anchor gifts (building sets, anything licensed). Early November: games and plush, and the last reliable restock wave if you missed October. December: stocking stuffers only, since those never truly run out.
