Every year the pattern repeats: a handful of toys go viral in November, stock evaporates by the second week of December, and resellers charge double for whatever's left. You can't predict the exact viral toy — nobody can — but the categories that sell out are the same every year. Buy from them in October and you're immune to the whole circus.
1. The brand-name building sets
Licensed and flagship building sets are Christmas's most reliable sellout. Production runs are fixed months in advance, and when they're gone, they're gone until February. If a rocket, truck, or castle is on the list, buy it early.
